KK012 - Nocando - Hackney Town Hall

by Nocando

Published May 14, 2006

Nocando is a freely improvising music trio made up of Nicolas Christian (prepared electric bass), Jerry Wigens (clarinet) and Armin Sturm (double bass). Their various influences, which include contemporary, jazz or rock take their music beyond conventionally predetermined genres and provide the material to be pulled together (or prised apart) in collective engagement.

The contents of their first collective release, Hackney Town Hall, was selected from a number of recordings made informally on mini-disc.

Loosely conceived around the idea of location and space, the album could be heard as an attempt to challenge fixed and rigid ideas which seek to confine musical expression to a predefined territory. Or, more simply, as with all improvised music, the notion of free musical space takes priority. Where can the line between musical collaboration and individual expression be drawn in such a space ? That’s for you to decide.
